How to make TextEdit the default text Editor on Mac


If other text editors have been installed on your Mac, it may so happen that text files open up with them, if you wish they should open with TextEdit the build-in text editor for macOS, then follow the below steps,

  • Right Click on the file icon you want to open with TextEdit as default,
  • Now click on Open With... -> Others...,
    Setting TextEdit as the default text editor on Mac
  • Select TextEdit,
  • Also make sure to select "Always Open With",
    Choose TextEdit Application and also tick always open with
  • Click Open.

After doing so, the file with the extension (eg .txt) will always open with TextEdit on the Mac.
