Change Read and Write Permissions on Mac Terminal

Method 1: Using chmod Command

  1. Open Terminal from your Applications folder or by searching for it using Spotlight.
  2. Navigate to the directory containing the file or folder you want to change permissions for.

    Syntax:

    cd path/to/your/file_or_folder
  3. Use the chmod command to change the permissions.

    Syntax:

    chmod [permissions] [file_or_folder]


    Example:

    chmod 755 myfile.txt
chmod example mac terminal


Method 2: Using Finder

  1. Open Finder and navigate to the file or folder you want to change permissions for.
  2. Right-click on the file or folder and select Get Info.
  3. In the Info window, scroll down to the Sharing & Permissions section.
  4. Click the lock icon and enter your administrator password to make changes.
  5. Use the dropdown menus to change the permissions for each user or group.


Method 3: Using Get Info

  1. Open Finder and navigate to the file or folder you want to change permissions for.
  2. Right-click on the file or folder and select Get Info.
  3. In the Info window, scroll down to the Sharing & Permissions section.
  4. Click the lock icon and enter your administrator password to make changes.
  5. Use the dropdown menus to change the permissions for each user or group.
