If other text editors have been installed on your Mac, it may so happen that text files open up with them, if you wish they should open with TextEdit the build-in text editor for macOS, then follow the below steps,
- Right Click on the file icon you want to open with TextEdit as default,
- Now click on Open With... -> Others...,
- Select TextEdit,
- Also make sure to select "Always Open With",
- Click Open.
After doing so, the file with the extension (eg .txt) will always open with TextEdit on the Mac.
