Reason for this error:
If you look closely at the address bar on the Safari browser, you will see that there is a message "Pop-up Window Blocked". So the reason for this error is that Office.com is trying to open the Spreadsheet on a new tab but it is blocked.

The fix is quite simple, just click on the icon of the window as pointed out in the screenshot on the address bar and the Excel Sheet will open on a new tab..
